Skanda Sashti November 2024: Rituals

During Skanda Shashti, devotees observe rigorous fasting, known as Nirjala Vrata, abstaining from food and water throughout the day. They wake up early, bathe, and offer prayers to Lord Murugan, reciting sacred mantras and chanting his name. Temples dedicated to Murugan are decorated with flowers, leaves, and vibrant processions.

Devotees perform Abhishekam, a ritualistic bath, to the deity using sacred substances like milk, honey, and sandalwood paste. This purification ceremony is believed to bring spiritual renewal and divine blessings. Additionally, devotees offer fruits, vegetables, and sweet dishes, known as Naivedyam, to Lord Murugan, expressing gratitude for his protection.

In the evening, devotees gather for the Maha Deeparadhana ceremony, lighting lamps and camphor to symbolise the triumph of light over darkness. Special pujas and yagnas are performed, accompanied by chanting and devotional songs. As the sun sets, devotees break their fast, sharing prasad and joyful moments with family and friends, reinforcing community bonds and spiritual connection.
