Snan Purnima 2025: Significance

As the seasons change, the bathing ritual represents renewal and purification. Following their lavish bath with 108 pitchers of water, the deities go into a state of seclusion known as Anasara, where they rest and get ready for their spectacular reemergence at the Ratha Yatra.

The idols are carried to the bathing area in a colourful procession called Pahandi or Pahandi Vijay, the day before Snana Yatra. Some even consider this festival to be Lord Jagannath's birthday, and devotees congregate to get a glimpse of the gods. After 14 days, on the first day of the Shukla Paksha in Ashadha month, the temple doors reopen as the excitement for the return of the deities grows. Devotees travel from all over the nation to observe the holy rites and festivities during this festival, which is a treasured occasion.
