Somvati Amavasya December 2024: Amavasya signifies the New Moon Day, considered the darkest day in the Hindu calendar. Hindus perform rituals and pujas to honour ancestors and gods. When Amavasya falls on a Monday, it becomes Somvati Amavasya, a rare and significant event dedicated to Lord Shiva. This day is also crucial for Pitra puja, where people pay respects to their ancestors, seek their blessings and foster a deeper connection with their heritage. This year, the last Somvati Amavasya of the year 2024 is being observed by devotees on 30th December 2024. As it falls in Paush month, it will also be known as Paush Amavasya.

Somvati Amavasya December 2024: Significance
According to the Mahabharata, Bhishma Pitamah explained the importance of Somvati Amavasya to Yudhisthira. After the Kurukshetra war, Yudhisthira sought Bhishma's advice on how to ensure the prosperity of the Kuru-Pandava dynasty. Bhishma suggested that Yudhisthira observe the Somvati Amavasya Vrat to receive the blessings of noble children. Taking a sacred dip in the river on this day is believed to bring prosperity and wipe away sorrows.
Observing Somvati Amavasya is thought to bring numerous benefits. Worshipping Lord Shiva on Mondays is considered beneficial for fulfilling one's wishes. Fasting on this day can bring glory, luck, and a good reputation. Childless couples may be blessed with a child, and the poor can become wealthy. Additionally, fasting by married women is believed to ensure their husband's long life, while the day's peaceful energy brings relief and calm to the mind and heart.

Somvati Amavasya December 2024: Rituals
In Indian tradition, the Peepal tree is deeply revered. To honour this sacred tree, women wrap a sacred thread around its trunk 108 times, effectively circling the tree in a symbolic gesture. They then offer the tree milk, flowers, sandal paste, and vermilion as a mark of respect.
On this day, devotees fast from dawn till dusk. It's also considered auspicious to donate white-coloured items or food, such as rice, curd, sugar, and milk, to those in need. By performing these rituals, devotees seek to connect with the sacred energy of the Peepal tree and cultivate spiritual growth and well-being.
