The Legend Behind The Stambheshwar Mahadev Temple
According to religious beliefs, the temple was built by Lord Kartikeya himself. The legends state that when Lord Kartikeya slew the demon Tarakasura, he was overcome with guilt since the demon was a devout follower of Lord Shiva. Therefore, on the instruction of Lord Vishnu, Kartikeya was supposed to install the Shiva Lingam at that temple to make amends for his deed. This is the reason why the temple has such great importance.

- Rediscovered 150 years ago: Though steeped in legend, the temple was rediscovered in modern times about 150 years ago. Before that, it was just buried amidst the sea waves and sand.
- Height and the Shiva Lingam: The Shiva Lingam here stands about 4 feet tall and about 2 feet in cross-section diameter. At high tide, when the sea rises, this large 4-foot-tall Shiva Lingam is completely submerged in water.
- Distribution of Offerings: One unique tradition that is common in the temple is that at times, sea waves take away the offerings that devotees make at this temple. This is considered a blessing given by the sea to devotees.
- Natural 'Alarm' System: The priests of the temple and the local people know by the roar of the waves when the temple is getting submerged, and they quickly escort the devotees safely.
