You'd be surprised to know that even Lord Jagannath, who is believed to cure diseases and heal his devotees, also falls ill and needs rest to recover. It is believed that just before the Rath Yatra, Lord Jagannath falls ill for 15 days and stays in isolation during this time.

Like a normal human during this time, he is offered healthy foods like fruits and porridge and no one is allowed to enter the temple. But why does this happen? After all, he is a god. Let's understand the theory behind it and what legends say.

Why Does Lord Jagannath Fall Sick Before The Rath Yatra?

Lord Jagannath, who is known as the 'Lord Of The Universe', is one of the forms of Lord Krishna. He is one of the most famous and worshipped gods in Hinduism, especially in Odisha. He is worshipped with his siblings, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra.

Every year, Rath Yatra takes place on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashadh. This year, the Rath Yatra will begin on 16th July, 2026. During this festival, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are placed in a chariot and set out on a journey to visit their aunt at the Gundicha temple.

However, before this Rath Yatra, it is believed that Lord Jagannath falls sick for 15 days. During this time, no devotee is allowed to visit the temple. It is said that during Snana Yatra, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra are bathed with 108 pots of water, due to which they fall ill. This marks the beginning of the Anasara period. During this period:

  • Lord Jagannath and his siblings rest for 15 days, and no one is allowed to enter the temple.
  • They are given Ayurvedic medicines to heal and recover.
  • Their diet is light and filled with Ayurvedic herbs, including fruits, herbal juices and porridge.
  • During this time, the devotees visit the Alarnath Temple instead.

Spiritual And Symbolic Meaning Behind Lord Jagannath's Sickness

Lord Jagannath's sickness carries a spiritual and symbolic meaning. Here's what it represents:

1. It shows Lord Jagannath's compassion for his devotees. It reflects that even God experiences illness and healing.

2. His treatment with Ayurvedic medicines shows the importance of natural healing and recovery through proper care.

3. His temporary isolation represents that devotees also need spiritual and physical renewal, and reminds them that rest is also important for healing.

The Story Behind Lord Jagannath's Sickness

According to Hindu mythology, there was an ardent devotee of Lord Jagannath named Madhav. He visited Lord Jagannath every day and used to serve him. He sang bhajans, spent time in his devotion and found complete peace in the presence of his Lord. He did not have any attachment to the outside world. For him, his Lord Jagannath was everything.

One day, Madhav Das' health deteriorated severely. He suffered from extreme diarrhoea and vomiting. Whenever someone came to see him and offered to help, he refused them, saying his lord himself would protect him.

Seeing his devotee’s suffering, Lord Jagannath came and took care of Madhav. He helped him recover.

After he was cured enough to know what was happening around, Madhav asked Lord Jagannath why he was serving him when he could have simply healed him. In response, Lord Jagannath said that whatever is written in one’s destiny must be experienced no matter what. If a person does not, then in the next lifetime they have to suffer it.

Madhav's 15 days of illness were still left in his destiny. So, Lord Jagannath offered to take on Madhav's pain and experience the remaining 15 days of illness so that it would be removed from his destiny. Since then, it is believed that Lord Jagannath remains ill for 15 days.

After these 15 days, Lord Jagannath reappears before devotees in his healthy and rejuvenated form during the Nava Yauvana Darshana, marking the beginning of the Rath Yatra.
