Tulsi Vivah 2023: The Tulsi Vivah is a sacred day in the Hindu faith which marks the solemn occasion of the wedding of Goddess Tulsi with Lord Vishnu in his Shaligram avatar. In accordance with the Hindu and Panchang calendars, this ceremonial festival is held during the month of Kartik (Shukla Paksha). Commencing on Prabodhini Ekadashi, the eleventh lunar day, the Tulsi Vivah celebrations last until the full moon night, also known as Kartik Poornima. The sacred Tulsi plant or Vrinda Devi is regarded as a highly auspicious and venerated plant in Hinduism. The tulsi plant is believed to be the incarnation of the goddess Lakshmi. The leaves of this sacred plant are required for significant Hindu rituals and the worship of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, Lord Rama and Lord Hanuman. Most Indian homes have a tulsi plant in the middle of the courtyard or facing the house, taking pride of place. This year, the Tulsi Vivah ceremony will be observed on 24th November 2023.

Tulsi Vivah 2023 Significance

In the Hindu calendar, Tulsi Vivah is regarded as one of the most auspicious days. In India, the Hindu wedding season officially begins on this day. Married ladies conduct the Tulsi Vivah Vrat and Puja for the happiness of their marriage and the health of their spouse and children. Additionally, unmarried ladies perform this puja in hopes of finding compatible spouses.

According to a widely accepted myth, Goddess Tulsi was born as Vrinda, a woman who wed the evil king Jalandhar. She fervently worshipped Lord Vishnu and prayed ceaselessly for her spouse's well-being and long life. Consequently, Jalandhar gained invincibility. Lord Shiva asked Lord Vishnu to lessen the strength of Jalandhar. Thus, Lord Vishnu deceived Vrinda by taking the form of demon king Jalandhar. As a result, Jalandhar lost all of his power and Lord Shiva assassinated him. After learning the truth, Vrindadevi cursed Lord Vishnu and ended her life drowning in the sea. Her soul was deposited in the plant that would eventually become known as Tulsi by Lord Vishnu and other gods. On the day of Prabodhini Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu also got married to Tulsi devi in the subsequent incarnation, taking the form of Shaligram, or black stone. Since then, the ceremony of Tulsi vivah has been marked on this day.

The mandap is also decorated with lights and flowers. The idol of Lord Vishnu and the Tulsi devi plant are surrounded by flowers. Additionally, an actual marriage ceremony is performed for the deities in order to mark the occasion.
