Vaikasi Amavasai May 2025: Significance

In the Tamil Panchangam, Amavasai is notably significant, especially during the month of Vaikasi. Worshippers carry out ceremonies and present prayers to Lord Vishnu and their ancestors, seeking their blessings and guidance. By doing so, they strive to create peace and harmony within their families while pursuing prosperity and good fortune. This holy day provides a chance for spiritual development, cleansing and the pursuit of divine grace, with numerous followers engaging in sacred rites and activities to gain its advantages. The occasion of Vaikasi Amavasai also coincides with the auspicious occasion of Shani Jayanthi.

Vaikasi Amavasai May 2025: Rituals

As per tradition, it is believed that visiting a Shiva or Murugan temple after performing tarpanam on Vaikasi Amavasai brings advantages. Moreover, providing a combination of green rice, fenugreek seeds and jaggery to a cow is thought to bestow blessings. It is believed that worship on this new moon day grants long life, prosperity and offspring.

On Amavasya, it is recommended that men observe a fast and offer prayers, whereas women partake in particular rituals, preparing the favourite food of their ancestors and presenting them to the photographs of their departed relatives, accompanied by flowers. Some vegetables are excluded from cooking, while others are included to promote prosperity for the home.

It is also suggested to light a mustard oil lamp beneath a majestic tree and to offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu in the morning. It is thought that pouring a spoonful of milk onto the ground can assist in overcoming challenges in life. Worshippers also go to Shani temples, offering mustard oil, black lentils, iron and blue flowers and reciting the Shani mantra 101 times.
