Valmiki Jayanti 2025: Significance
Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti falls on Ashwin Purnima every year in accordance with the Hindu Panchang. Maharishi Valmiki, a revered sage and poet, is celebrated for his unparalleled contribution to Hinduism, particularly through his epic, the Ramayana. Born as Ratnakar, Sage Valmiki's life took a turn after encountering Sage Narada, leading him to penance and ultimately becoming a great poet. He is revered as Adi Kavi, the first poet of Sanskrit literature, and his work has had a profound impact on Indian culture. Valmiki's teachings promote Lord Rama's values, emphasising truth, duty and compassion. The Valmiki community, found primarily in Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan, worship him as their ancestor and god.

Valmiki Jayanti 2025: Rituals
On Valmiki Jayanti, devotees pay their respects to the revered saint and poet, Maharishi Valmiki. Processions carrying his portrait are held in towns and villages, while Hindu devotees worship him fervently. Prayers are offered to his portrait, and recitations of the Ramayana take place in Lord Ram temples across India. Temples dedicated to Valmiki are decorated with flowers.
The atmosphere is filled with spirituality as incense sticks are lit, and kirtans and bhajan programmes are held in temples. Devotees visit Lord Rama temples, reciting verses from the Ramayana in remembrance of Maharishi Valmiki. The day is marked with charity and kindness, as free food is distributed to the poor and needy.
