According to legends, Sawan Shivratri symbolises the union of Shiva and Shakti, the two great cosmic forces. Devotees observe this day to express love, devotion, and gratitude to Mahadev. In North India, the festival is especially significant, where Kanvariyas carry sacred Gangajal from holy rivers and perform Abhishekam at Shiva temples. It is believed that sincere prayers and offerings on this day wash away past sins and bring blessings of peace and prosperity.

The rituals of Sawan Shivratri begin a day before, with devotees eating only once on Trayodashi. On Shivratri, they observe a strict fast and take a vow to remain spiritually focused. Devotees bathe twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, before beginning the night-long worship of Lord Shiva. Offerings like milk, honey, bel leaves and Gangajal are made to the Shivlinga, while prayers and chants continue until midnight or beyond.
