While many Hindu deities are offered grand delicacies as bhog, such as Motichoor Ladoo to Lord Ganesha, Kheer to Goddess Lakshmi, Besan Ladoo to Lord Hanuman, Lord Jagannath’s most cherished offering is surprisingly simple Khichidi.

Let us understand the reason behind this humble offering.

Why Lord Jagannath Is Offered Khichdi As Bhog?

Lord Jagannath, who is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, resides in Jagannath Puri, which is one of Hinduism’s four holy dhams. Every year, the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, with his siblings, takes place on the second day of the Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadha. This year, the yatra begins on 16th July, 2026. Devotees from all around the world visit Odisha during this time to witness this grand Rath Yatra and seek the blessings of Lord Jagannath.

Among 56 offerings (chappan bhog) presented to the Lord, bajra khichdi holds a unique place, as it is traditionally offered first.

According to legends, there was a devoted worshipper of Lord Krishna named Karmabai. Since childhood, she used to adore Lord Krishna's child form and loved him like her own son.

One day, instead of offering fruits or sweets, she prepared simple bajra khichdi with her own hands to offer the Lord. Touched by her affection, Lord Jagannath asked her to prepare the same meal for him every morning.

From that day onwards, Karmabai started preparing khichdi first thing in the morning every day. It is believed that Lord Jagannath would come every day and accept her offering.

The Lesson That Changed A Tradition

One day, a saint saw Karmabai preparing food without first bathing or following the rituals. He scolded her and told her that without following proper purification, her offering would not be accepted by the Lord. Karmabai, with humility, accepted his advice and followed all the formalities before cooking.

The next morning, when Lord Jagannath arrived, he found himself waiting as Karmabai was completing all the rituals. After that, when he was leaving the house, the Lord saw the saint and understood what had happened.

That night, the Lord appeared in the saint's dream and reminded him that rituals are not as important as pure love. The Lord preferred Karmabai's innocently prepared bhog over rigid discipline.

From that day, Karmabai returned to her original way, waking up and directly preparing Bajra khichdi with deep love, exactly as she always had.

Years passed, and when Karmabai finally left her physical body in Puri, something deeply emotional happened. That morning, when the temple priests opened the doors of Lord Jagannath's sanctum, they found the Lord's idol with tears in his eyes. He had lost his mother, his dearest devotee, the one who fed him bajra khichdi every day.

The Lord Himself revealed to the priest in his dreams that Karmabai had passed away and asked, "Who will feed me now?" Since that day, it became a tradition that every morning, the first bhog offered to Lord Jagannath in the temple is bajra khichdi in eternal remembrance of Karmabai's love.
