Superstitions Myths: In ancient Indian beliefs and folklore, movements in various parts of the body are associated with auspicious and inauspicious omens. These are discussed in Samudrik Shastra, Shakun Shastra, and astrology books. One such indication is itching on any part of the body. While this may sound simple, these signs often indicate fate and significant changes in the future. It is often said that an itchy palm often indicates wealth and shows that money is about to come in abundance.

In The Daily Jagran’s Series - Superstitions Myths, know why an itchy palm is believed to be the harbinger of money as per Indian tradition.

Why Itchy Palm Is Believed To Be Harbinger Of Money?

According to Samudrik Shastra, itching in the palm of your hand upon waking in the morning is considered an auspicious sign. It is often considered a sign of financial gain. However, it is important to note that this itching should occur in the right palm of a man and the left palm of a woman.

For men, itching in the right palm is associated with financial gain, meaning unexpected money may be received soon and vice versa for females. This could be a sign of a job promotion, business profit, or recovery of an old debt. According to beliefs, itching in the left palm of a male usually indicates increased expenses. This can also be taken positively, as the expenditure may be for some auspicious purpose. However, it most often indicates financial loss. For women, itching in the right palm indicates financial loss.

Other Interpretations For Itchy Hand Or Palm According To Hindu Beliefs

According to popular belief, persistent itching on the right hand or right side of the body is considered inauspicious, indicating future financial loss. Scratching the itchy area is discouraged to avoid financial loss. However, Samudrika Shastra offers the opposite interpretation. Itchy right hand is considered a symbol of upcoming wealth and prosperity.

In Hinduism, Lakshmi represents wealth, fertility, and good fortune. An itchy left palm is thought to mean Lakshmi is leaving, which might point to losses or more spending. It is worth noting that for women, this belief is reversed. An itchy left hand is seen as lucky for women, but an itchy right hand could mean money troubles.

Conclusion:

Although these signs of itching are primarily associated with ancient beliefs and omens, in modern life they have also been seen as psychological and situational signals. For example, morning itching in the palm can sometimes symbolise a person's positive thoughts and hope.

However, Samudrik Shastra also states, and it is worth noting, that if this itching occurs frequently or persists for a long time, it shouldn't be considered an omen, rather, it could be a sign of a physical disorder. Individuals should consult a dermatologist or physician.
