Yamuna Chhath, also referred to as "Yamuna Jayanti," is a significant Hindu festival honouring the goddess Yamuna. The cities of Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate this event with considerable fanfare. The auspicious event of Yamuna Jayanti marks the birth of the river Yamuna as it is also believed that it was on this day that she descended on Earth. This significant event is celebrated on the sixth day, or "Sashthi," of the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) in the Hindu month of Chaitra. This year, Yamuna Chhath will be celebrated on 14th April 2024.

Yamuna Chhath 2024: Significance Of This Festival 

The sacred Hindu legends suggest that Goddess Yamuna is Lord Krishna's consort. In recognition of this, she is held in great regard by the Brajwasis, and the inhabitants of Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate Yamuna Chhath with great zeal and passion. Yamuna, the Ganga, the Godavari, the Brahmaputra, and the Saraswati are all revered rivers in India. As per the Hindu legends, River Yamuna is believed to have descended on Earth on the shashthi tithi of Chaitra Maas.

It is believed that Yamraj had bestowed upon Yamuna the boon that anyone bathing in the Yamuna River would be spared from having to travel to Yamlok. For this reason, a holy bath in the Yamuna river in Braj is observed on the day of Yamuna Jayanti. This deed wipes away all of the individual's misdeeds and provides them a chance to start over.

Yamuna Chhath 2024: Rituals Associated With Yamuna Jayanti 

- Devotees rise early on the auspicious day of Yamuna Chhath and take a spiritual bath in the Yamuna River at sunrise and sunset. On this day, devotees are believed to be able to obtain eternal happiness as well as soul purification by taking a dip in the Yamuna River.

- On this day, at a particular "muhurat," a special puja is performed for Goddess Yamuna. Since Goddess Yamuna is regarded as Sri Krishna's consort, worshippers of Goddess Yamuna also worship Lord Krishna on this day. 

- "Naivedyam" is a special food offering that is made and offered to the Goddess. Once the puja is over, friends and family receive the prasad and food is given to the Brahmins.

- Yamuna Chhath is observed by devotees as a day of rigorous fasting. For a full day, they abstain from all food and drink. Once the morning puja ceremonies are completed, the next day is dedicated to breaking the fast.
