Yogini Ekadashi 2025: Vrat Katha
Hema Mali was a loyal gardener who lived in the affluent kingdom of Alakapuri, which was governed by King Kuvera. It was his responsibility to deliver fresh flowers from Mansarovar Lake every day for the king's devotion to Lord Shiva. Hema Mali lived a happy life with his lovely wife, Swarupavati, and was devoted to his work. Unfortunately, one day he was too preoccupied with spending time with his beloved wife to deliver the flowers. King Kuvera sent a messenger to enquire as to why there were no flowers for the puja when he arrived at the temple.
The king took Hema Mali to court after discovering his carelessness and severely punished him. He was cursed with leprosy, exiled from the kingdom, and divorced from his wife. Hema Mali was left alone and miserable as he made his way through the forest to the ashram of Sage Markandeya. He expressed his grief there and received advice to observe the Yogini Ekadashi fast with utmost devotion to Lord Vishnu.
Sincerely, Hema Mali took the sage's counsel. He was miraculously healed after finishing the vrat, and King Kuvera welcomed him back to Alakapuri. Hema Mali resumed his peaceful life after being reunited with his wife. This story demonstrates how effectively the Yogini Ekadashi vrat can atone for sins and alleviate suffering. It is considered auspicious to worship both Lord Vishnu and Lord Kubera on this auspicious occasion because Kubera, the lord of wealth, is also linked to this day.
