India's Aditi Gopichand Swami clinched the gold medal in the women's individual compound event at the World Archery Championships 2023 after defeating Andrea Becerra of Mexico 149-147 in the final on Saturday.

Her win marked India's first-ever individual gold medal in the history of the World Archery Championships at the ongoing edition of the tournament in Berlin.

Aditi is a Khelo India athlete as she earned the title of 'World Champion' and the Sports Authority of India (SAI) was quick enough to acknowledge her achievement on social media.

"#KheloIndia Athlete Aditi Gopichand Swami crowned World Champion at the #ArcheryWorldChampionships The 17-year-old created history by defeating 's Andrea Beccera 149-147 in the Women's Individual Compound final and winning the glorious gold for India's Heartiest congratulations!," tweeted SAI Media.

World Archery, the governing body of the sport across the world, also announced Aditi's win, tweeting, "Aditi Swami gets the first individual World title for India. The 17-year-old prodigy is now the world champion. #WorldArchery."

Aditi finished sixth in the qualifying round but created history by becoming the youngest archer to hold the top position on the podium in an individual category at the senior world championships.

She got the better of fellow countrymate Jyothi Surekha Vennam149-145 in the semifinals to book her place in the summit clash.

Meanwhile, Jyothi Surekha Vennam beat Ipek Tomruk of Turkey 150-146 to win the bronze medal in the women's individual compound event.

Another Indian archer, Parneet Kaur, was knocked out in the quarterfinals after losing to Jyothi.

Earlier, Jyothi, Parneet Kaur, and Aditi Gopichand Swami had teamed up to win the women's compound team event and clinched India's first-ever gold at the archery world championships.

The trio defeated the Mexican combination of Dafne Quintero, Ana Sofa Hernandez Jeon, and Andrea Becerra 235-229 in the final

India have so far won three medals, two gold, and one bronze in the World Archery Championships 2023, which is the first qualifier event for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games for the archers.
