India's both men’s and women's teams clinched silver medals at the Asian Games 2023 chess events in Hangzhou on Saturday.

In the women’s team event, the Indian team of Koneru Humpy, Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal, and Savitha Shri B ended up with seven wins, one draw and one loss in their nine rounds.

Their only defeat in the campaign was a 2.5-1.5 loss against hosts China in round four. India beat the Republic of China 4.0:0.0 in the final round to secure the silver.

The hosts China, on the other hand, with eight wins and one draw, took the gold medal in the women’s event. Kazakhstan, with six wins, one draw, and two losses, settled for bronze.

In the men's event, the Indian team of Gukesh D, Vidit Gujrathi, Arjun Erigaisi, Pentala Harikrishna, and Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa also settled for a silver medal, finishing in the second position behind Iran.

Iran picked up seven victories and two draws from the total of nine rounds while India won six and drew three.

Uzbekistan ended up taking the bronze with six wins, two draws, and one loss. The Indian men sealed their position with a 3.5:0.5 win over the Philippines.

The two silver medals were the only medals contributions from India's chess contingent to India's overall tally at the Asian Games 2023.

India had a disappointing campaign in the individual events with the chess players getting nothing at the showpiece event.

Koneru Humpy, the women’s individual champion from Doha 2006, finished only seventh in Hangzhou while Harika Dronavalli, a bronze medal winner from Guangzhou 2010, closed her campaign just outside the medal positions, in fourth.

In the individual men’s event, Vidit Gujrathi finished fifth, closely followed by Arjun Erigaisi in sixth.

Chess was included as an event in the Asian Games programme in the editions of 2006 and 2010.

However, it was dropped in the next two editions in 2014 and 2018 which took place in Incheon and Jakarta respectively before making a comeback at Hangzhou 2023.
