India's star athlete and two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalist Mirabai Chanu had a disappointing but brave outing in the women's 49kg Weightlifting event in Hangzhou on Saturday.
Chanu failed to take the podium finish with a medal due to the thigh injury she sustained during training earlier.
Chanu lifted a total of 191 kg, finishing fourth in the final standings. Chanu’s best clean and jerk attempt was 108 kg, with an 83 kg attempt in snatch. Her tally of 191 kg fell short of third-placed Thanyathon Sukcharoen’s attempt of 199 kg.
While attempting a 117kg clean and jerk lift, she lost her balance and fell on her back as she took the brave step aiming for a medal that would have been a silver one had she been successful in the attempt.
She couldn't complete the same attempt twice and collapsed during her final attempt. Chanu's injury left her limping from the arena.
Chanu was already playing the chasing game as she managed to lift only 83kg in the snatch portion of her event. Her attempts to lift 86kg were also unsuccessful.
North Korea's Ri Song-gum ended up winning the gold medal as she lifted the best of 92 kg in the snatch category and lifted a massive 124 kg, which is now a world record, Asian record, and Asian Games record. Her combined lift of 216 kg is also a world record.
