Chelsea have appointed academy graduate Reece James as their new captain ahead of the next Premier League season where the club will be eyeing an improved outing after a disappointing campaign last season.

The decision has come following ex-skipper Cesar Azpilicueta's summer departure to Laliga club Atletico Madrid.

James has been part of the Chelsea Academy since he was six years old and is set to lead the team in this new chapter. His first assignment will be the upcoming Premier League season, which is set to commence on August 12, 2023, and conclude on May 19, 2024.

"I'm so happy to take on the role and responsibility," said James. "I know I've got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.

"I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it's a great feeling for me and my family," he added.

The former skipper Azpilicueta is referred to as a Stamford Bridge 'legend' having captained the side to several victories, including the Europa League in 2019, the Champions League in 2021, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2021.

The appointment of James as the new club captain was made by Chelsea's manager, Mauricio Pochettino as with the player's emergence as an effective performer since his integration into the senior team in 2019 played a crucial role in securing his new position.

"This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season," said manager Pochettino.

"He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas," he added.

Reece was integrated into the Chelsea first team ahead of the 2019/20 campaign by Frank Lampard. He scored on his debut – a long-range finish against Grimsby Town – and struck a memorable goal in the Champions League against Ajax.

There were 37 appearances made in that debut campaign. Reece would go on to make 47 during his second season on the men’s side. It was a campaign that ended in spectacular fashion as the club claimed the Champions League for the second time in its history.

Reece was limited to 24 appearances last term due to injury but has featured regularly throughout the pre-season under Mauricio Pochettino.
