Commonwealth Games 2030: The 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) will be hosted in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, confirmed by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly on Wednesday. Notably, this is the second instance of India hosting the games in the country. 2010 edition was hosted in the capital region of New Delhi.
India receiving the baton for the 2030 games was a mere formality after Ahmedabad was recommended as the proposed host of the centenary edition by the Commonwealth Sport's Executive Board last month. Interestingly, a number of 74 members put a seal of approval on India's bid as hosts.
That recommendation followed a process overseen by the Commonwealth Sport's Evaluation Committee.
"India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance...We start our next century for the Commonwealth Games in good health," said Dr Donald Rukare, President of Commonwealth Sport.
With this, India's ambition to host the Olympic Games in 2036 got another boost.
Ahmedabad has been prepping up to upgrade its infrastructure to increase the city's capacity, which is in the race for Olympic hosting rights as well.
India was facing competition from the Nigerian city of Abuja for the 2030 bid. But Commonwealth Sport decided to instead consider the African nation for the 2034 edition.
The first Commonwealth Games, then called the British Empire Games, was held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
