After making it to the semi-finals of the FIDE Chess World Cup, India's R Praggnanandhaa accomplished a remarkable feat by becoming the youngest ever finalist in the tournament. The 18-year-old defeated world No.3 Fabiano Caruana in the semi-finals, securing a place in the final against 5-time world champion Magnus Carlsen. This achievement makes Pragg the first Indian, since Vishwanathan Anand, to reach the final of the Chess World Cup.

Praggnanandhaa's journey began two years ago at the FIDE Chess World Cup 2021, where he made a strong debut and displayed his potential in the initial rounds. Throughout the FIDE World Cup 2023, Pragg has showcased patience and capitalized on opponents' mistakes. Even in the semi-final, where the classical format could have ended in a draw, he excelled in the tie-breakers, demonstrating remarkable nerve control under time pressure.

His journey to the final involved a range of challenging opponents. He advanced to the second round without playing the first due to his opponent's unavailability. In the subsequent rounds, he defeated Maxime Lagarde, David Navara, Hikaru Nakamura, Ferenc Berkes, and Arjun Eregaisi.
