Japan National football team’s brilliant FIFA World Cup 2026 display came to a heartbreaking end as Gabriel Martinelli’s stoppage-time strike earned Brazil a dramatic 2-1 victory. The five-time world champions made it into the Round of 16 after a hard fight.
For 90 minutes, the Samurai Blue fought with their heads high with one of football's greatest nations and looked capable of producing another famous World Cup upset. Previously, they had knocked out Germany, and the story was quite similar today.
However, Brazil's experience eventually proved costly for them as Carlo Ancelotti's side completed a fascinating comeback in Houston to keep their hexa dream alive.

Japan’s Rise In World Stage
Japan's rise in world football has been one of the biggest stories of recent years. Their unbeaten group-stage campaign once again showcased their tactical discipline, intensity and high pressing discipline.
Brazilian legend Zico completely changed their footballing culture and made the Samurai Blues one of the Asian powerhouses. Following that, the tactical shifts, the disciplined squad strength and the ability to fight back made Japan one of the dark horses in the FIFA World Cup.
Japan Dominated Proceedings
Brazil National football team entered the contest as favorites, but it was Japan who struck against the run of play. Kaishu Sano punished an under-hit Brazilian pass in the 29th minute, driving into open space before shooting from a distance.
The powerful, well-placed shot went beyond the goalkeeper for his maiden international goal. The Samurai Blue defended with tremendous organisation and carried their deserved advantage into half-time.
Brazil, however, emerged with renewed urgency after the interval. Carlo Ancelotti had demanded "mind, heart and clarity" from his players, and they responded immediately.
Brazil Came Back Stronger
After going close twice, Casemiro finally netted the equalizer in the 56th minute, rising highest to power home Gabriel Magalhaes' inch-perfect cross. However, Japan's defenders should have been more resilient and marked him well.
The equaliser shifted the momentum completely as Brazil put more men forward for the winner.
A few minutes later, the Real Madrid winger Vini Jr, danced past the Japan defense and chipped the ball with his outside foot into the goal.
Zion Suzuki produced another outstanding display between the posts, denying Vinicius Junior. Ancelotti also introduced Endrick when the whole world thought of Neymar Jr. Endrick brought pace into the side and with his physicality, he was a constant threat up front.
Martinelli Breaks Japanese Hearts
Japan did everything by playing a low-block system to defend against the Samba boys. Just when extra time looked inevitable, Brazil found one final breakthrough.
Bruno Guimaraes threaded a perfectly weighted pass into Gabriel Martinelli, who kept his composure to beat Suzuki in the 90+5th minute and spark wild celebrations among the Brazilian supporters.
It was a defensive lapse as Japan midfielder Ao Tanaka lost the ball on the edge of his own box. Moreover, the positioning of the defenders in the Japan penalty box was poor as Martinelli got an open net.
Martinelli later admitted he always believed another opportunity would come. "After hitting the woodwork, I knew I'd get another chance. I honestly don't have the words. I'm just happy I was able to help the team," the Brazil forward said after scoring the decisive winner.
Carlo Ancelotti praised his players for remaining calm despite trailing for much of the contest. "We didn't lose our patience. Japan isn't an easy opponent; it's very organized and intense. The team was playing well and we believed the goal would come," the Brazil coach stated.

What Went Wrong For Japan?
Japan executed their game plan brilliantly for almost an hour, frustrating Brazil with disciplined defending and dangerous counter-attacks. However, once Casemiro equalised, the momentum completely shifted.
As Junya Ito admitted after the match, Brazil repeatedly delivered measured crosses into dangerous areas and eventually exposed Japan's defence. The defenders were too tired after a point of continuous defending. The relentless pressure proved too much, with Martinelli finally finding the decisive breakthrough in stoppage time.
Head coach Hajime Moriyasu was naturally devastated but proud of his squad's effort.
"The players gave their all today, as they did throughout the journey to reach this point. Right now, I'm devastated, but I want to accept this result and use it to become an even stronger team," Moriyasu said.
Brazil now marches into the Round of 16, where they will face the winners of Côte d'Ivoire and Norway, while Japan leaves North America with a memorable World Cup campaign and a story of their rise on the global stage.
