Ecuador produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Sebastian Beccacece's side came from behind to defeat Germany and secure a historic place in the Round of 32.
After collecting just one point and failing to score in their opening two matches, La Tri entered their final Group E fixture needing a special performance against an already-qualified German side. They delivered exactly that, overturning an early deficit before Gonzalo Plata's late winner saw celebrations among thousands of Ecuadorian fans inside New Jersey Stadium.
The victory sees Ecuador reach the World Cup knockout stage for only the second time in their history, completing a remarkable turnaround after a difficult start to their campaign.
Ecuador Fight Back After Germany's Dream Start
Germany started very well with a brilliant display of attacking football. Just two minutes into the game, Florian Wirtz set up Leroy Sane, who calmly slotted beyond Hernan Galindez to score Germany's earliest FIFA World Cup goal since 1934 and put the group winners firmly in control. But the Ecuador National football team refused to panic.
Seven minutes later, Nilson Angulo took charge and showed his class. After Pablo Vite won possession high up the pitch, the midfielder drove forward before finding Angulo, whose fierce strike from outside the area squeezed through Aleksandar Pavlovic's legs and beyond Manuel Neuer to score Ecuador's first goal of the tournament.
Germany thought they had earned a penalty shortly after the restart, only for VAR to overturn the decision after identifying an earlier foul by Sane in the build-up. That moment shifted the momentum completely towards Ecuador.
Plata Delivers Historic Qualification
The decisive moment arrived midway through the second half. Following sustained pressure, substitute Kevin Rodriguez flicked on a corner at the near post and Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest, stretching ahead of Neuer to steer the ball into the roof of the net and send Ecuador into the knockouts.
Germany searched for an equaliser, with Sane forcing another save from Galindez, but La Tri defended heroically to complete one of the tournament's biggest shocks.
Despite the defeat, Germany progressed as Group E winners on goal difference, while Ecuador advanced as one of the best third-placed teams after a memorable night that will live long in the nation's football history.
Ecuador's Belief Rewarded
Head coach Sebastian Beccacece dedicated the achievement to the Ecuadorian people, insisting the qualification belonged to the players and supporters who never stopped believing throughout a challenging group stage.
Match-winner Gonzalo Plata admitted the journey made the qualification even better after Ecuador struggled in their opening two matches. The winger praised the squad's belief and thanked the travelling supporters, saying their backing made every stadium feel like home and helped inspire the team when they needed it most.
On the other hand, Germany captain Joshua Kimmich accepted that his side made life too easy for Ecuador after a bright start. At the same time, forward Denis Undav admitted the South Americans were sharper, more aggressive, and fully deserved the victory.
