Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni hinted that his time with the national team could be coming to an end following the heartbreaking FIFA World Cup 2026 final defeat to Spain.
Journalists inside the media room were kept waiting as Scaloni delayed his arrival after the loss, and when he finally faced the press, the 48-year-old struggled to hold back his emotions before suggesting he may step down after December.
The coach, who transformed Argentina into one of world football's dominant forces, repeatedly paused during the press conference, fighting back tears as he reflected on the defeat and his future.

Lionel Scaloni’s Comments
Scaloni admitted he needs time to reflect on whether he has the energy to continue leading the Albiceleste after one of the most painful nights of his managerial career.
"I will talk to the president. I have an idea of what I would like to do. I will see out my contract, and I feel the need. I don't know if something as big can be done. We need to speak this through."
He thanked the Argentine Football Association for trusting him with the role and said everyone within the squad had given everything until the final whistle.
"I am thankful to the president for bringing me this chance of being in this place where I am at the moment. It was a dream place for everyone. We have tried up until the very last minute to give our utmost, the staff and players," he added.
Scaloni then paused before continuing with an emotional admission. "I believe it's only fair that I can take this time for myself to think this through... Bear with me, I don't know if I can continue."
Scaloni Breaks Down In Tears
The Argentina boss struggled to compose himself as he spoke about the challenges of rebuilding another championship-winning team.
"This place is wonderful, it is a dream place. We would never have imagined, including my staff, that we would be in this place. In order to continue you need a great deal of things, especially resetting your mind, rebooting, creating a group like this again. That is very difficult to create again," the Argentine coach exclaimed.
Unable to hold back his emotions, Scaloni eventually stood up, apologised to the gathered media and walked out of the press conference.
He later added another emotional message that further fuelled speculation over his future.
"This place is incredible. It's everything I ever dreamed of. It's been a pleasure to be here, a true honor. I'll stay until December, and after that it'll be difficult. I'll stay until December, and after that I'll most likely step away," Scaloni concluded.
