Virat Kohli continued his remarkable ODI career by smashing a century against the West Indies in the first ODI at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday.
Kohli reached his hundred in just 74 balls, adding another major milestone to his long list of ODI records. His century has put him on the verge of several historic achievements and helped him add another chapter to his record-breaking career.
Kohli Eyes Unique ODI Record
The century is Kohli’s 10th ODI hundred against the West Indies. He already has 10 ODI centuries against Sri Lanka, and by reaching 10 against the Caribbean side, Kohli becomes the first batter in men’s international cricket to score 10 ODI centuries against two different opponents.
Kohli Completes 15,000 ODI Runs
Kohli also reached the massive milestone of 15,000 ODI runs during his innings. He came into the match needing 59 runs to reach the landmark, having scored 14,941 runs before the game. With this achievement, Kohli became only the second batter in ODI history to cross 15,000 runs after Sachin Tendulkar. Kohli also reached the milestone faster than Tendulkar, adding another significant record to his ODI career.
Kohli Equals Gavaskar’s West Indies Record
Kohli’s century also took his total number of international hundreds against the West Indies to 13. He now joins former India great Sunil Gavaskar for the most international centuries against the Caribbean side by an Indian batter.
Kohli Closes In On Tendulkar’s Home Records
The century has also taken Kohli closer to two major records held by Sachin Tendulkar on home soil. Kohli had 6,867 ODI runs in India before this match and needed 110 more to move past Tendulkar’s tally of 6,976 ODI runs at home. His century leaves him just 10 runs short of that record. Kohli has also moved to 42 international centuries on home soil, putting him level with Tendulkar’s record of 42.
