The Mexico National football team vs South Korea National football team stats show that the match was exciting, and both sides tried to get the better of each other.

Road to Glory

With qualification firmly in sight, Mexico entered the match knowing victory would send them through to the Round of 32.

The atmosphere inside Guadalajara Stadium was tense long before kick-off, with a flyover above the venue adding to the occasion. Yet despite the noise from the stands, the action on the pitch took time to erupt.

South Korea remained disciplined and compact, denying Mexico space in dangerous areas while looking to threaten on the counterattack. The first half passed with few clear-cut opportunities as both teams cancelled each other out.

However, the game burst into life immediately after the restart. Jesus Gallardo fired a low effort into the side-netting just four minutes into the second half, signaling Mexico's growing intent. Moments later, the deadlock was broken, and the co-hosts scored their first goal.

Romo Punishes Korean Error

A misunderstanding between goalkeeper Kim Seunggyu and defender Lee Gihyuk handed Mexico the opportunity they had been searching for.

As the ball broke loose inside the area, Luis Romo reacted quickest and calmly placed it into the open net in the 50th minute, sparking mad celebrations among the home supporters.

The goal shifted momentum firmly in Mexico's favour as El Tri looked to put the contest beyond doubt.

South Korea, however, refused to surrender and remained within touching distance throughout the second half.

Rangel's Moment Of Magic

Kim Seunggyu partially redeemed himself for his role in the goal with a brilliant save in the 75th minute.

The South Korean goalkeeper stood tall to deny Raul Jimenez from point-blank range, keeping his side alive heading into the closing stages.

That save appeared significant when South Korea launched one final push for an equaliser.

With just three minutes remaining, Raul Rangel produced one of the finest moments of the tournament so far. The Mexican goalkeeper somehow denied Cho Guesung from close range before instantly reacting to keep out Yang Hyunjun's follow-up effort, completing a double save.

The unbelievable double save brought the stadium to its feet and ultimately preserved Mexico's narrow advantage.

As the final whistle sounded, the celebrations began both on the pitch and in the stands as Mexico secured their place in the knockout rounds.

"It was difficult. We know them very well. They put us under a lot of pressure. They didn't give us any space, and neither did we. In the end, it felt like one mistake was always going to make the difference one way or the other. It wasn't a great match, and the opposition didn't allow us to do much,” said Mexico coach Javier Aguirre.

El Tri March Into The Knockouts

The victory means Mexico has become the first nation to qualify for the Round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Having already collected maximum points from their opening two matches, Aguirre's side now know they will return to Mexico City on June 30 to face a third-placed team from either Group C, E, F, H or I.

For South Korea, the defeat leaves qualification hopes hanging in the balance ahead of their final group-stage fixture.

South Korea coach Hong Myungbo felt his side executed the game plan despite the defeat. "We played just as we planned. The way we conceded was disappointing. We will give everything in the last game of the group stage. I asked the players to remain calm and play our game. It wasn’t bad. We kept our composure throughout the game. We will focus on preparing for the next game now,” he stated.
