FIFPRO Men's World XI 2024: Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah were the notable absentees in the men's FIFPRO World XI which was announced on Monday.
This was the first time since 2006, the Argentina and Inter Miami star Messi missed out from the XI.
Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr were two of the six players Real Madrid players included in the 2024 Men's World XI. Four players, Ederson, Dani Carvajal, Antonio Rudiger, and Rodri, made their first appearances on the team.
Real Madrid have the most players in the World XI which is not surprising considering their last season’s success. The Los Blancos won both the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League titles in the summer before heading into the new season with the UEFA Super Cup victory.
Notably, the World XI is solely chosen by players across the world, unlike many other awards or recognitions in football.
Professional football players from 70 countries cast a total of 28,322 votes, setting a new record for the number of votes this time.
The 39-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, also missed out on a place in the men's FIFPRO World XI.
Messi and Ronaldo were the only players not with European clubs voted onto a 26-man shortlist by FIFPRO last week.
A stellar midfield saw Jude Bellingham and Toni Kroos (Madrid) picked alongside playmaker Kevin De Bruyne and Ballon d'Or winner Rodri from City.
Alongside Mbappe and Vinicius, Manchester City striker Erling Haaland was also included to complete the lethal front three.
Talking about the women's team, Chelsea defender Lucy Bronze, formerly with Barcelona, was selected for a record-equalling seventh time to match Lyon and France defender Wendie Renard.
Two-time women's Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati is in midfield after helping Barcelona win the Spanish League, the Spanish Cup and the Champions League.
