France vs Sweden Match Result: Mbappe Stars as Les Bleus Storm Into FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16

Kylian Mbappe continued to rewrite FIFA World Cup history as France national football team thrashed Sweden 3-0 to book their place in the Round of 16 with another commanding show at New Jersey Stadium.

The France captain struck twice to take Didier Deschamps' side into the next round and move within touching distance of another milestone. Mbappé's brace took his FIFA World Cup tally to 18 goals, leaving him just one behind Lionel Messi's all-time record of 19 while also sending him to the top of the Golden Boot standings.

With Bradley Barcola also finding the net, Les Bleus produced yet another brilliant performance and showed why they are being considered as one of the best contenders for the FIFA World Cup 2026.

France's Relentless Pressure Finally Pays Off

France dominated from the opening whistle and constantly put pressure on the Swedish defense in their own half.

Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring early, only for the flag to deny him, before the forward hit the woodwork. Bayern star Michael Olise also came very close with a flamboyant overhead kick that struck the post, as the Sweden national football team somehow survived. It could have been one of the goals of the tournament after Pele and Ronaldo.

Finally there efforts were put in vain on the stroke of half-time. Receiving the ball after a cleverly worked short corner, Mbappe danced past two defenders before producing a powerful shot into the far corner to hand France a thoroughly deserved lead.

Sweden barely had time to regroup after the restart before France doubled their advantage. Olise, once again pulling the strings, slipped Bradley Barcola through on goal and the PSG winger calmly finished it.

Mbappe Closes In On World Cup History

France were dominant after the break and continued creating chances, forcing Jacob Widell Zetterstrom into several impressive saves to keep the scoreline respectable.

Mbappé eventually completed his brace in the 74th minute after another smooth assist from Olise to score his sixth goal of the tournament.
The strike also raised the 27-year-old to outright second on the FIFA World Cup's all-time scoring charts with 18 goals, moving him clear of Miroslav Klose and within one of Lionel Messi's record 19.

Olise, meanwhile, continued his outstanding tournament by registering two more assists to take his tally to five. It is the highest by any player at the competition so far.

France will now take on Paraguay in the round of 16 assignment and will look to produce another masterclass.
