- In a recent ceremony in New Delhi, the IOA officially flagged off the Indian contingent ahead of the Games.
- India's preparation has been far more structured than in previous editions.
- India's weightlifting hopes will once again revolve around the Olympic silver medalist.
The Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 are knocking at the door. Indian fans are excited to see their athletes plying trade in some of the biggest events where India can bring medals. India won a total of 61 medals at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The hopes are even higher this time with Athletics and Boxing being the primary focus.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23 to August 2, with a trimmed sporting programme compared to previous editions. That reduced schedule, however, does not necessarily reduce India's medal expectations.

The ceremony also saw the unveiling of Team India's ceremonial and competition kit, designed by Aaquib Wani in collaboration with JSW Sports. The send-off was attended by Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, IOA President PT Usha and several leading athletes.
How Is India Preparing For Commonwealth Games 2026?
India's preparation has been far more structured than in previous editions. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Sports Authority of India (SAI), IOA and national federations have held multiple review meetings over the past few months to ensure athletes receive uninterrupted training, international exposure and scientific support before Glasgow.
Unlike previous years where last-minute preparations often became a talking point, the focus this time has been on athlete-centric planning. Most medal contenders have spent months competing in international circuits while also undergoing specialised training camps.
Neeraj Chopra Leads Athletics Challenge
The biggest face of India's campaign will once again be Neeraj Chopra. The Olympic and World Champion continues to remain India's strongest gold medal contender in men's javelin. Despite recovering from a minor niggle earlier this season, Chopra returned to competition and remains one of the favourites heading into Glasgow.
Apart from Chopra, India's athletics team includes promising names across relay events, race walking, long-distance races and jumps, with the Athletics Federation of India selecting a balanced squad capable of challenging for multiple podium finishes.
Boxing Continues To Be India's Biggest Weapon
If there is one sport capable of delivering multiple medals in a short span, it is boxing. Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain headlines the women's challenge, while Nishant Dev, Jaismine Lamboria and several young national champions have impressed throughout the qualification cycle.
Indian boxing has consistently produced medals at the Commonwealth Games and expectations remain equally high despite stronger competition from England, Australia and host nation Scotland.
Weightlifting Still Remains A Medal Factory
India's weightlifting hopes will once again revolve around Olympic silver medallist, provided she competes after qualifying. The experienced lifter has repeatedly delivered on major stages and remains one of India's safest medal bets.

India has sent a 124-member contingent for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, with athletes competing across the sports in which the country secured qualification.
Challenges For India Ahead Of Glasgow Commonwealth Games
Despite the optimism, India's road to success will not be straightforward. The biggest challenge is the reduced sporting programme. Glasgow 2026 features significantly fewer sports than Birmingham 2022, meaning India loses traditional medal opportunities in disciplines such as wrestling, shooting and cricket. Those sports have historically contributed heavily to India's overall tally.
