Indian badminton stalwart HS Prannoy revealed on Monday that he is taking a temporary break from competition to focus on his recovery from chikungunya, a viral illness that hindered his performance at the recent Paris Olympics and left him in need of a health reset.

This decision comes after a challenging performance at the Paris Olympics, where he competed despite struggling with the effects of Chikungunya, a viral illness that left him sore and visibly slower on the court.

Prannoy's Olympic campaign ended with a straight-game loss to compatriot Lakshya Sen in the Round of 16, prompting him to take a break and focus on regaining his physical fitness.

In a statement on X, Prannoy wrote, "Unfortunately, the battle with Chikungunya has taken a toll on my body, leaving me with persistent pains that make it impossible to compete at my best. After careful consideration with my team, I've decided to withdraw from some of the upcoming tournaments to focus on recovery. Thank you for your understanding and support during this challenging time. I’ll be back stronger."

Prannoy, the world championship bronze medalist, has withdrawn from competition to focus on his recovery from lingering health issues, including a chronic stomach condition and back injury.

Although he didn't specify the duration of his break or the tournaments he's withdrawing from, Prannoy's decision comes after a courageous showing at the Paris Games, where he won his group matches despite being below peak physical condition. His Olympic campaign ultimately ended with a loss to compatriot Lakshya Sen in the round of 16.
