France captain Kylian Mbappé has found himself at the centre of a major racism controversy involving Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across the football community, with the French Football Federation announcing legal action and FIFA President Gianni Infantino publicly condemning the racist remarks.
What Exactly Happened?
The controversy erupted after France edged past Paraguay 1-0 in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32. The heated contest saw several aggressive challenges and confrontations between players, with Mbappe becoming one of the central figures.
Following the match, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla launched a critical attack on the French captain through a series of social media posts. The opposition Liberal Party politician referred to Mbappe as a "colonised Cameroonian" who was "pretending to be French", while also making several other insulting remarks aimed at the French superstar.
Amarilla further escalated the matter by claiming that Paraguay's players should have slapped Mbappe after the game. Her comments immediately triggered widespread criticism, with many describing them as racist and discriminatory.
Racial Abuse Controversy Explained
Amarilla's remarks were widely condemned for targeting Mbappe's heritage and identity rather than his performances on the pitch. The comments quickly went viral across social media, drawing backlash from football fans, anti-racism groups and public figures.
The senator later published an open letter insisting that her criticism was directed at Mbappe personally and not at France as a country.
She wrote that she had studied at a French school, spoke French and regularly visited France, arguing that her issue was solely with the France captain. Amarilla accused Mbappe of showing arrogance before and during the match, citing his pre-match comments and his refusal to shake hands with Paraguay's goalkeeper after the final whistle.
Despite her explanation, the controversy continued to grow, with many maintaining that her earlier remarks amounted to racial abuse.
Mbappe vs Celeste Amarilla: What Was Said?
The war of words intensified after Mbappe hit back with a strongly worded response. The France captain described Amarilla as "a despicable woman" who was "unworthy" of holding public office.
"You do not represent Paraguay, that country which has sweated passion and honour throughout the competition," he stated. Mbappe further added that Amarilla's "brazen racism" had overshadowed Paraguay's impressive World Cup journey.
"I will never allow people like her the freedom to spread their hatred and racism across the world," Mbappe said.
Amarilla refused to back down. In another lengthy statement, she demanded a public apology from Mbappe and warned the French forward of legal action.
Addressing the France captain directly, she wrote: "You don't know me, you have no idea who I am."
She also defended her earlier criticism by accusing Mbappe of disrespecting Paraguay and claimed his behaviour before and after the Round of 32 clash had offended the entire nation.
Meanwhile, the French Football Federation announced that it would file a criminal complaint, calling Amarilla's comments "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable."
France assistant coach Guy Stéphan labelled the remarks "disgraceful, vile and outrageous," while French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed support for Mbappe and praised him for standing up against racism.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino's Stand
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also reacted strongly to the controversy by publicly backing Mbappe.
"I unequivocally condemn the racist comments directed towards Kylian Mbappe by Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla. All of football and society stand in solidarity with the France captain. We need to fight racism and defeat it all together," the FIFA President stated.
Infantino shared the statement on his Instagram Story, reaffirming FIFA's zero-tolerance stance against racism during the World Cup.
