JE Sports Desk:  Lakshya Sen, India's star shuttler has clinched the Canada Open 2023 title after getting the better of China's Li Shi Feng in the final on Sunday.

Sen was considered a favorite heading into the summit clash and successfully bagged the contest with a win of 21-18, 22-20 over the All-England champion. Lakshya had a 4-2 head-to-head record against his Chinese counterpart heading into the final, having recently defeated him at the Thailand Open.

He was quick to share his happiness on social media as he was left delighted after a remarkable performance in the tournament.

"Sometimes, the hardest battles lead to the sweetest victories. The wait is over, and I am delighted to be crowned the Canada Open winner! Grateful beyond words," Sen wrote on Instagram.

The 21-year-old had a remarkable tournament as he kicked off it with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand in the first round followed by a 21-15, 21-11 win against Brazil’s Ygor Coelho de Oliveira in the second round.

Lakshya then had to work hard to get the better of Julien Carraggi of Germany as he defeated him 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 in the third round. In the semifinal, the young sensation Lakshya beat Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 21-17, 21-14.

Currently ranked 19th in the world, Sen also marked his first final appearance of the year and overall second Super 500 summit clash appearance having last played a final at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022.

Lakshya has suffered first-round exits in four events with his best performance being the Indonesia Masters in January where he reached the quarter-finals.

Sen, who underwent nose surgery for a deviated septum after the World Championships last August, has been trying to regain his form. The surgery was followed by frequent illness and allergies for over eight months.

The BWF World Tour is divided into six levels, namely World Tour Finals, four Super 1000, six Super 750, seven Super 500, and 11 Super 300.

One other category of the tournament, the BWF Tour Super 100 level, also offers ranking points.
