Lionel Messi grabbed the limelight during Inter Miami's pre-season match against Club America as he scored his first goal of 2025.

Inter Miami emerged victorious as they got the better of Mexico's Club America 3-2 on penalties at the Allegiant Stadium on Sunday.

Argentinian superstar Messi headed home a Luis Suarez cross from close range after 34 minutes to equalise for the Major League Soccer side after America had taken the lead through Henry Martin moments earlier.

Apart from registering his name in the scoresheet during the 2-2 draw between both teams in the normal time, Messi's celebration sparked significant discussion.

In his celebration, Messi made a three-finger gesture, representing Argentina's three FIFA World Cup titles, followed by a zero sign, alluding to Mexico's lack of World Cup victories. Initially, the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner turned his back to the crowd, showcasing his iconic number 10 jersey.

He then displayed a three gesture with his fingers, followed by a 2-0 gesture, referencing the final score between Mexico and Argentina in the last World Cup held in Qatar 2022, where the Messi-led side lifted the trophy.

A significant portion of the crowd began to chant Messi's name while the America supporters booed the veteran player.

Messi’s goal on Sunday was his first under new manager Javier Mascherano a year after 36 goal contributions (20 goals/16 assists) in just 19 matches en route to being adjudged the 2024 Landon Donovan MLS MVP.

Mascherano removed Messi from the field on 66 minutes in a flurry of second-half substitutions.

Inter Miami will next be in action against Universitario de Deportes in Peru as part of their five-match preseason tour.

They’re preparing for the club’s 2025 MLS regular-season opening match on February 22 against New York City FC and their CONCACAF Champions Cup return on February 18 at Sporting Kansas City.
