India's Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign has received an early boost, with Olympic medallist Lovelina Borgohain becoming the country's first confirmed medallist in Glasgow.
She grabbed the medal for India even before the opening ceremony. The experienced boxer has secured at least a bronze medal in the women's 75kg event after receiving a direct bye into the semifinals.
The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games is underway in Glasgow, Scotland, and Lovelina's favourable draw has ensured India opens its medal account before the boxer has even stepped inside the ring.
Under the Commonwealth Games boxing format, both losing semifinalists receive bronze medals, meaning the Assam star is guaranteed a place on the podium regardless of her semifinal result.

Lovelina Borgohain Receives Direct Semifinal Bye
The women's 75kg category features a limited number of participants, resulting in Lovelina being handed a direct passage to the last four. As a result, she has skipped the preliminary rounds and will begin her campaign directly from the semifinals.
The bye guarantees India their first medal of the Glasgow Games and also keeps Lovelina firmly in contention for a second Commonwealth Games gold. She had won the gold medal in the women's 70kg category at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and will now aim to add another top podium finish in a new weight division.
The 27-year-old is also one of India's most decorated boxers, having claimed a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, multiple World Championship medals, and an Asian Championship title.
When Will Lovelina Borgohain Fight Next?
Lovelina will make her first appearance in the women's 75kg semifinal on July 30 at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC), Hall 5.
