Neeraj Chopra continued his impressive run on the big stage by winning the silver medal in the men’s javelin throw at the 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday. The Indian star was not at his very best but still managed a season-best throw of 85.83m to finish second in difficult weather conditions.

The 28-year-old Olympic champion produced his best throw in the second round. It was slightly better than his previous season’s best of 85.69m, which he had recorded at the Doha Diamond League in June.

India celebrated another medal as Yashvir Singh won bronze on his Commonwealth Games debut. The 24-year-old delivered when it mattered most, producing a personal-best throw of 85.41m with his final attempt of the competition.

Yashvir had entered the event with a personal best of 83.72m. His last throw lifted him into the top three and completed a memorable day for India, with two javelin throwers standing on the podium.

Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage took home the gold medal with a brilliant throw of 89.75m in the second round. None of the other athletes could match that effort as he comfortably finished on top.

The conditions were far from ideal, with cold weather and strong winds making life difficult for the competitors. Despite that, Pathirage came close to the 90-metre mark and showed why he was one of the favourites for the title.

For India, Chopra’s silver and Yashvir’s breakthrough bronze added to another successful day in athletics. While Chopra once again proved his consistency on the international stage, Yashvir announced himself with the biggest performance of his career.
