Tejaswin Shankar created history for Indian athletics by winning the bronze medal in the men’s decathlon at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. With this achievement, he became the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon.

The battle for the podium went all the way to the final event, the 1500m race. Tejaswin finished in 4:36.19, earning 704 points from the event. That took his overall score to 7,976 points, which was enough to secure the bronze medal.

England’s Sammy Ball finished the 1500m slightly ahead of Tejaswin with a time of 4:32.29. However, despite the faster run, Ball could not make up enough points to move ahead of the Indian in the overall standings.

Grenada’s Lindon Victor successfully defended his Commonwealth Games title by winning the gold medal, while Canada’s Damian Warner claimed silver. Tejaswin finished third to complete the podium and achieve a milestone for Indian athletics.

The bronze medal is one of the biggest moments of Tejaswin’s career. His all-round performance across all ten events helped him script history, as India celebrated its first-ever Commonwealth Games medal in the decathlon.
