India’s Tejaswin Shankar won the bronze medal in the men’s decathlon at the Asian Games on Sunday after finishing the gruelling two-day competition with 7,934 points.

Shankar saved one of his strongest performances for the final event, winning the men’s 1500m race in 4:33.09 to secure his place on the podium.

Strong Start on Day One

The national record holder began the second day at the top of the standings with 4,338 points.

He had put together a strong opening day across the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m events to establish an early lead.

The decathlon features 10 events spread over two days, testing athletes across sprinting, jumping, throwing and middle-distance running.

Shankar Finishes With a Win

With the medal places still to be decided, Shankar needed a strong finish in the 1500m.

He delivered exactly that, winning the final event in 4:33.09. His performance helped him finish third overall with 7,934 points and secure the bronze medal.

The result adds another major international medal to Shankar’s career. Earlier this year, he also won bronze at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Ancy Sojan clinched a silver medal in the women’s long jump

Earlier, Ancy Sojan won the silver medal in the women’s long jump at the Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Sunday after a dramatic finish in Nagoya.

Ancy had been in the gold-medal position for most of the final, but China’s Huang Yingying produced her best jump on the final attempt to snatch the top spot.

Huang jumped 6.55m with her last effort, finishing just two centimetres ahead of Ancy, who recorded a best of 6.53m. China’s Mengyi Tan took the bronze medal with 6.46m.
