Paris Olympics 2024: India's star shooter Manu Bhaker has been named as the country's flagbearer for the Paris Olympics 2024, which is scheduled to take place on August 11.

The 23-year-old Manu, who had a historic outing at the Paris Games and won two bronze medals, confirmed the news on her social media account and thanked the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) for choosing her.

“It is an honour and privilege to be named as India's flag-bearer for the Closing Ceremony of the Paris Olympics,” Bhaker said.

“Leading the outstanding Indian contingent with the tricolour in my hands with millions around the world watching is a truly humbling opportunity and one that I will cherish forever. I am grateful to The IOA for considering me worthy of this honour, and I look forward to raising the Indian flag with immense pride. Jai Hind!”

Notably, Wrestler Bajrang Punia was India’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics three years ago.

On the other hand, PV Sindhu and Sharath Kamal carried India’s flag during the Parade of Nations, held on the Seine River during the opening ceremony of the ongoing Summer Games.

The IOA has not named a male flag-bearer for the Paris 2024 closing ceremony yet.

Making her second appearance at the Summer Games in Paris 2024, Manu opened India's medal account with a bronze medal in the Women's 10m air pistol shooting.

She repeated the brilliance with another bronze in the Mixed team 10m air pistol shooting alongside Sarabjot Singh.

Bhaker also became the first Indian woman to win a medal in shooting and is the third Indian post-independence – after Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu – to win two Olympic medals.

Manu was so close to winning a third medal but finished fourth in the 25m pistol final.

All three of India’s medals so far at the Paris 2024 Olympics have come from the shooting contingent.
