Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur have appointed Son Heung-min as the new club captain as he takes over the leadership role from the veteran goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Son, who is into his ninth season at the club, now becomes the focal point after the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, Lloris too is set to leave the club.

Kane had captained the side recently in three of their four pre-season friendlies and was expected to be handed the armband on a full-time basis.

However, Spurs' all-time leading scorer completed an £86.4m move to Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Son, who joined the club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, is the first Asian player to become the captain of a Premier League club.

"It's such a big honor to captain this huge club. It was a big surprise and a very proud moment. I've already said to the players that everyone should feel like a captain, on and off the pitch," he said.

"It's a new season, a fresh start and I will give everything for this shirt and this armband."

Postecoglou added: "Sonny has great leadership qualities, both on and off the pitch, and is the ideal choice to become our new captain.

"Everyone knows he is a world-class player, and he has enormous respect from everyone in the dressing room.

"He transcends groups within the squad. That's not just because he's popular - it's because of what he has achieved in the game, both here and as captain of South Korea."

Summer signing James Maddison and Argentine World Cup winner Cristian Romero have been named as new vice-captains.

The 31-year-old Son since joining Spurs has featured in 268 Premier League matches and has scored 103 goals with 52 assists to his name as well.

He has bagged 145 goals in 372 appearances for the Spurs including 15-plus goals in six of the eight seasons with the whites
