Vinesh Phogat Appeal Verdict Live Updates: The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has heard the appeal filed by Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat regarding her disqualification from the Paris Olympics. The Sole Arbitrator's decision is expected to be issued before the end of the Olympic Games. Phogat has also requested a joint silver as she was found overweight after she won the semi-final in Paris.
Each of the party was accorded a chance to file detailed legal submissions prior to the hearing and then present oral arguments. Senior advocate Haris Salve is representing Phogat at the Court of Arbitration for Sports. IOA President Dr PT Usha thanked Senior Advocates Harish Salve and Vidushpat Singhania, as well as the Krida Legal team, for assisting the IOA present its arguments during the hearing.
The Indian Olympics Association (IOA) has approached a senior lawyer and former Solicitor General of India, Harish Salve, to represent Vinesh Phogat during the hearing. A major controversy broke out after Vinesh Phogat's disqualification, leaving her medal-less despite winning three consecutive matches to reach the 50kg freestyle wrestling final. However, as per United World Wrestling (UWW) competition rules, a wrestler's results would be annulled if he or she does not make the weight on either day of competition. Following her disqualification, Vinesh Phogat filed two appeals in the CAS; one against her disqualification for being 100 grams overweight and the second to hand her silver medal, as she reached the final while weighing as per the rules. If the CAS rules in favour of Phogat, the IOC will have to award a joint silver to Vinesh.
