JE Sports Desk: Marketa Vondrousova beat Ons Jabeur 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets to become the third Czech woman to win the women's singles title in Wimbledon.

She was too strong on the day when neither woman could have reliably held her serve as she became the first unseeded women’s singles champion in the open era.

“I don’t know what is happening, it is an amazing feeling. Ons congratulations, you are such an inspiration for us. I hope you win some day, you are an amazing person. After everything I have been through it is amazing I can stand here and hold this. Tennis is crazy! The comebacks aren’t easy you don’t know what to expect, I was hoping I could get back to this level and now this is happening. Thank you for my box, my little sister is crying! I mean it is amazing, tomorrow is our first wedding anniversary. It’s great to have you guys here, I enjoyed the two weeks so much. I am so grateful and proud of myself. I made a bet with my coach, if I won a grand slam he was going to get a tattoo too – I think we are going to go tomorrow! I think I am going to have some beer, it was an exhausting few weeks. Thank you, guys, for the support!" Vondrousova said after the match.

Vondrousova is a 24-year-old left-hander from the Czech Republic who is ranked 42nd and was the first unseeded woman to play for the title at the All England Club in 60 years. Vondrousova trailed in each set but collected the last four games of the first, then the last three games of the second.

The Tunisian,  Jabeur, on the other hand, was denied the trophy last year by defending champion Elena Rybakina. She gave it all her this year but once again fell short in the final.

“This is the most painful loss of my career,” Jabeur says with tears in her eyes. It will take some time to adjust. But she is strong enough to state that she will come back and claim the trophy, perhaps next year. “We're going to make it one day, I promise you," she said after the game.

This is Vondrousova's first Grand Slam title. She lost in the final of the 2019 French Open as a teenager.

In the semifinal, she got the better of Elina Svitolina, defeating her 6-3, 6-3 on Thursday.
