The increase in online task scams is becoming an alarming trend. Sadly, many users are falling prey to such scams via social media with the lure of easy money. Permitting this to happen is a dealer of pre-owned vehicles in Pune who lost a whopping ₹11.5 Lakhs. It all began with him receiving a text message that seemed innocuous, with the offer of small payouts for simple online tasks. However, it escalated to a sophisticated scam involving group chats, fake merchant tasks as well as repeated money transfers. The case as a whole reiterates the need for one to exercise extreme caution when too enticing offers are given to them.

How the Scam Unfolded

The victim was set to lose a vast amount of money with the receipt of a text message on a mobile messenger app, tasks which appeared simple. The first task paying him ₹150 was sufficient to motivate him.

  • The first task paid immediately, boosting his confidence.
  • He was added to a group where more tasks were provided.
  • With each task, payments were quickly credited to his bank account.
  • This immediate gratification created a false sense of trust.

Not long after, the scammers added “merchant tasks” that claimed even greater rewards, but this time, the victim needed to make a payment first. For what he thought would be considerable returns, he began sending funds to various accounts over the course of two days.

The victim had to pay more money to access his so-called profits. As a result, he lost a total of ₹11.5 lakh, which he realized all at once after several transactions.

Warning Signs and Prevention Tips

To avoid falling victim to similar scams, keep these precautions in mind:

  • There is no free money—exercise caution and assume it is a scam.
  • Do not give away your personal, banking, and contact details, especially to strangers on social media apps.
  • Do not join random groups on messaging applications such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
  • Do not send money based on promises of receiving higher amounts back.
  • Always verify suspicious messages with a trusted acquaintance or report them to cybercrime units.

Final Thoughts

The Pune online task scam serves as a sharpening reminder of how digital criminals are getting more sophisticated and cunning. What seems like a trivial task of ₹150 can turn into a greater loss very quickly. Always confirm the legitimacy of online earning opportunities and when you are not certain, prioritize safety by reporting it. Remaining vigilant and careful is the most effective protection against fraud in the digital space.
