Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is set to boost its telecommunication infrastructure by adding another one lakh 4G towers across the country. This comes after the successful installation of 1 lakh 4G towers earlier this month, which aims to improve access in metropolitan and rural areas alike. At the same time, the company is calling for the public to propose names for its 5G services, which are set to undergo trial testing across the country.
BSNL’s Massive 4G Expansion Plans
The 4G expansion plan was confirmed by the Union Minister of State for Rural Development and Communications, Dr Chandrasekhar Pemmasani, in an interview with The New Indian Express. He mentioned that The Department of Telecommunication (DoT) will be seeking Cabinet approval for the next phase of development in infrastructure.
“After successfully installing 100,000 towers with optimal 4G equipment, we will approach the Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve another 100,000 towers,” said Dr Pemmasani.
This growth opportunity is part of BSNL's plans to strengthen their position in the telecom sector in India. The company also plans to:
- Deploy additional 4G and 5G equipment
- Monetise existing infrastructure to improve cash flow
Dr Pemmasani admitted that the BSNL 4G homegrown equipment had some performance challenges in the beginning, but persistent improvements achieved much better reliability.
“We expect it to operate near perfection by the end of July or August next year,” he added.
BSNL 5G Name Contest: Public Participation Encouraged
In a bid to build excitement around its upcoming 5G rollout, BSNL has launched a naming campaign on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The operator is asking users to submit suggestions for the name of its 5G service.
“Make history. Name the future of BSNL 5G,” BSNL posted.
Suggestions can be submitted in the comment section of the post until 5 p.m. today (June 13). Among the trending suggestions are:
- BSNL Blitz
- Tez Bharat
- BSNL 5G Storm
This engagement initiative is part of BSNL’s broader digital outreach as it prepares to compete with private players in the 5G arena.
Conclusion
The expansion of BSNL’s 4G network and preparation for 5G services mark a significant shift for the government-owned telecom company. With homegrown technology being fine-tuned and citizens being involved in marketing, BSNL is trying to cast itself as a more responsive competitor in India’s telecom industry. With faster processes in place for approvals and equipment deployment, users will soon be able to access improved connectivity and new digital services.
