The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) warned users that it never asks citizens to share documents to update their Aadhaar details on WhatsApp or Email. For the unversed, the statutory authority repeatedly shares information via its X (formerly Twitter) handle to sensitise Aadhaar card holders to stay safe from scams.
In a recent post on X, the agency said it would never demand users to share Proof of Identity (POI) or Proof of Address (POA) via instant messaging apps like WhatsApp or Email. UIDAI recommends users visit their nearest Aadhaar centre to update the information or head to the official webpage.

"UIDAI never asks you to share your POI/ POA documents to update your #Aadhaar over Email or Whatsapp. Update your Aadhaar either online through #myAadhaarPortal or visit Aadhaar centres near you," it said in a post. Plus, the mAadhaar app, available on Google Play Store and Apple App Store, can also be used to avail of Aadhaar-related services.
In a previous post, the government body advised people not to click on "unknown or unverified links" or "fictitious SMS or E-mail" promising changes to Aadhaar. Plus, it never asks for OTP or PIN to update their card details.
Operating under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), the UIDAI had asked people to not circulate photocopies of their Aadhaar with organisations and to use a masked counterpart instead that displays the last four digits in the past.
