Google has recently expanded the accessibility of its 'AI Mode' within the Google Search platform. Initially introduced as a premium feature for Google One AI Premium subscribers, the search giant has now made AI Mode available to users in the United States without the requirement of a paid subscription. To activate the feature, users can navigate to the Google Labs webpage at labs.google.com/search/aimode and enable AI Mode. In this article, we will discuss the AI mode that is now available for free users in the US. So without any further ado, let’s head into the article.
AI Mode in Google Search
Google has launched its AI Mode in Google Search for free users in the US. The feature, which must be turned on in Google Labs, it even incorporates visual search via Lens and is powered by Gemini 2.0's multimodal capability.
In case you missed it, the AI Mode in Google Search shows a new tab where users can pose open-ended questions and receive comprehensive answers powered by a web-searching Gemini 2.0 model. AI mode is perfect for queries where users look for explanations and require complex response systems, enabling interaction along with the option to ask more follow-up questions.
As is the case with answers generated in AI Mode, recommended links and citations are presented alongside the answer too. In other words, Google is adding yet another Perplexity-like feature into its search product.
In addition to its existing features, Google has integrated a visual search function into AI Mode, utilising a tailored version of Google Lens and Gemini technology. This allows users to either upload a photo or record a question using voice commands. According to Google, AI Mode's multimodal capabilities, powered by Gemini 2.0, enable it to accurately detect context and respond to visually-based queries.
AI Overview that can be found on top of the web links in the “All” tab is completely different from AI Mode in Google Search. Currently, it employs the Gemini 2.0 model in the US; however, users cannot ask follow-up questions. AI Overview faced a lot of scrutiny in the past for generating inaccurate and even harmful information, such as suggesting people add glue to their pizza and drink urine for passing kidney stones.
Google appears to be trying to expand the users under the features of AI Overview and AI Mode more heavily in the future, but currently with the backbone of the improved Gemini 2.0 model.
That was it guys for this post, keep an eye out on Jagran English for more such updates!
