AI Revolution In Education? Public Schools In This City Are Ready To 'Embrace AI' In Class

AI MODEL ChatGPT is all over the internet, and now it is set to expand arguably in the most fun places in the education sector - Schools. Yes, the New York City Public Schools is lifting the ban it imposed on the use of AI tools such as ChatGPT, according to Business Insider.

While the NYC Public Schools are now ready to embrace AI in classrooms, things were not the same always. In a personal essay in the Chalkbeat, David C Banks, Chancellor of the NYC Department of Education, notes that the "knee-jerk fear" and the ill effects of the technology shadowed its potential use for students, teachers and the entire education fraternity.

"Our team began discussions with tech industry leaders about their platforms' potential and the future possibilities for schools, educators, and students," Banks said.

Further, the Chancellor cited an example of Queens middle school, where teachers deploy AI tools for customised "lesson plans and grade papers," among other duties. Following the precautionary measures initially, the process has now transformed into a quest and deep assessment of AI's potential and risks.

The NYC School System will provide educators with a repository/toolkit plus real-life case studies of AI implementation so that it improves their workflow and communication. "We'll continue to gather information from experts in our schools and the field of AI to further assist all our schools in using AI tools effectively," Banks notes.

For context, in January, these schools imposed restrictions on the use of AI because of its potential misuse. The risks cited during that time were "negative impacts on student learning and concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of content," as per Chalkbeat. However, the restrictions will now turn into fruitful use.

Meanwhile, since its launch, ChatGPT, a master creation of OpenAI, a research company, has been a hot topic in the technology space in India and the world over.
