The trailer of Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s upcoming film, has landed in controversy for an unexpected reason. Viewers spotted what appears to be a Google Gemini AI watermark briefly flashing in one of the early scenes, triggering a wave of criticism around the use of artificial intelligence in mainstream cinema and, more specifically, a lapse in post-production quality control.

AI Watermark Spotted, Then Quietly Removed

The problem emerged soon after the trailer premiered on Saturday. During a sequence that appears early in the film and shows a character cocking a shotgun, it has been claimed there was also a single-frame shot of the Google Gemini logo. Several people on X shared screen recordings pinpointing the moment, and one person speculated that “AI-generated footage (or an AI-enhanced visual element)” appeared in the final cut with the watermark left intact.

Curiously, the watermark is missing from the trailer currently streaming online, suggesting the studio might have discreetly seized control of that video and replaced it. But the damage was done. After screenshots and recordings spread, the conversation was no longer about a brief technical error but about an argument about AI’s place in movie making.

Social Media Reacts to AI in Mainstream Cinema

The reaction online has been overwhelmingly negative, with many users saying the whole incident was embarrassing and could have easily been avoided. Detractors say an AI watermark in a high-profile trailer reflects badly on the production pipeline for a movie that's said to have been produced at enormous cost.

If you can get beyond the trolling, the reaction has a distinctly tech aspect. In this instance, even if the AI-produced feature was inconsequential, failing to scrub a watermark suggests shortcomings in quality control. For an industry that is still very much about perception and polish, they can easily overshadow the actual content of a trailer.

At heart, the furore over Jana Nayagan's trailer has less to do with an absent edit and more about the arrival of AI behind the scenes. As generative tools become more available, filmmakers will require tougher technical scrutiny, greater disclosure and clearer lines regarding how they deploy AI. Otherwise, one stray frame can become a full-blown debate about technology, creativity and where cinema is even headed at all.
