On Saturday, Union Health Minister JP Nadda unveiled Disha, an AI-powered smart assistive device designed for patient rehabilitation at AIIMS here. According to the health ministry statement released during Dhanteras this year, AIIMS also saw another type of launch that wasn't associated with gold and jewellery: Disha was launched during AIIMS' annual Dhanteras event.

Built using Bluetooth Low Energy beacons and Artificial Intelligence routing algorithms, the application aims to eliminate confusion for first-time visitors to hospital floors by offering real-time, turn-by-turn directions across each one.

Smarter Navigation for Patients

The Disha app will make it easier to move across AIIMS by guiding users to:

  • OPD rooms
  • Diagnostic centres
  • Pharmacies
  • Billing counters

The app also ensures wheelchair-friendly turn-by-turn routes and gives voice and visual commands in multiple India languages to help elderly patients or disabled people find their way.

Offline and Multilingual Support

DISHA is different from many navigation apps that depend on the internet; Disha has offline use capability thus can provide continuous assistance in spotty wi-fi coverage zones within the hospital.

The app’s multilingual voice guidance functionality will also assist non-English speaking patients and carers, ensuring inclusivity among India’s varied population.

AIIMS’ Push for Patient-Centric Services

AIIMS Director, Dr. M. Srinivas, highlighted that Disha represents a move towards “next-generation, patient-centric services” by reducing dependence on crowded helpdesks and hospital staff.

Dr. Rima Dada, head of the AIIMS media cell, said that this app is also going to be useful for first-time visitors and elderly patients and it would make their hospital visit more convenient.

Why It Matters

In a hospital as big as AIIMS, thousands of patients are treated everyday and it's very easy for a patient to get lost in the maze of medical campus and feel stressed out. Using AI and BLE across hospitals, Disha could become the model for Indian hospitals to employ smart digital navigation systems which can enhance patient care while alleviating some burden from staff.

Final Word

AIIMS Disha is leading the charge towards an AI-led healthcare era by using technology not just for treatment and diagnostics but also to enhance patient experiences. If this app proves its worth, it could serve as a model for similar initiatives across large Indian hospitals as well as internationally.
