Amazon recently unveiled an ambitious plan to place artificial intelligence (AI) into the hands of millions of Indians. They will invest $12.7 billion in cloud and AI infrastructure across states such as Telangana and Maharashtra with the objective of making advanced AI tools available to students, small businesses and government systems by the end of this decade – aligning perfectly with India's goal of democratising technology while developing AI-savvy workforces.

Supporting Small Businesses with Practical AI

Amazon Web Services has already trained more than six million people in cloud computing since 2017, but the new phase shifts focus to hands-on AI adoption.

The plan is to simplify everyday business tasks, especially for small sellers who lack technical resources.

A set of new AI tools will assist with operations:

- GenAI for Listings can generate product descriptions from basic text, links or images.

- Creative Studio and Video Generator allow sellers to build ads and short videos without extra cost.

- Seller Assistant and the upgraded Seller Central dashboard will guide business owners, automate tasks and highlight insights that matter.

The idea is to remove friction, help sellers present their products better and run their online stores with more confidence.

Building the Next Generation of AI-Skilled Students

By 2030, Amazon wants to reach four million students in government schools, introducing structured AI learning well beyond theory.
The programme will include:

- Classroom modules

- Experiments

- Interaction with professionals

- Teacher training

Many students from rural areas will likely encounter advanced digital tools for the first time here. AI will be used to solve everyday problems, making learning practical rather than abstract - an essential contribution to India's job market! This initiative creates a steady pipeline of talented young talent entering its market.

AI-Powered Shopping for Everyday Users

Amazon is also applying AI to simplify shopping for millions of customers. Features like Rufus inside the Amazon app give tailored product suggestions and break down key details. Lens AI lets users search with photos or screenshots, while View in Your Room uses augmented reality to preview how furniture will look at home.

What This Means for India

The investment isn’t just about infrastructure. If successful, it could widen access to modern tools for small businesses, improve digital literacy in schools, and familiarise everyday shoppers with AI.

For a country where advanced tech is still concentrated in cities and large enterprises, Amazon’s push could help shift the balance — making AI feel less like a distant innovation and more like a tool anyone can use.
