Android’s Live Captions feature is getting a major upgrade that promises to make on-screen subtitles more expressive, engaging, and immersive. With this new update, Live Captions will go beyond simply transcribing spoken words—they’ll also include emotional cues and sound descriptions like laughter, applause, crying, and more. These expressive captions are designed to help users better understand the tone and mood of conversations, videos, and media content, making it especially helpful for those who are deaf or hard of hearing. The update aims to bring a more human, dynamic touch to the captioning experience, reducing the disconnect often felt when watching content without audio. This move is part of Android’s broader push toward accessibility and inclusive technology for all users.
Expressive Captions
Last year, Google implemented Expressive Captions as a component of Android's Live Caption system. This innovation not only transcribes the spoken content in audio but also endeavours to convey the nuances of tone, volume, ambient sounds, and human vocalisations. The primary objective of this feature is to ensure that users who are unable to perceive the audio can still comprehend its emotional and contextual implications.
Now Android Authority, in one of their latest APK teardowns, have spotted new expressions added in Google’s Live Caption System. They did the teardown with Android System Intelligence (V.23.playstore.pixel9.741245583) and found several new expressive captions.

If you have Live Captions enabled on an Android 14 or later device, you can expect to see Enhanced Captions, as long as the audio being captioned includes this feature.
When will you get this update?
In their article, Android Authority further mentions that this update of Android System Intelligence was targeted only for Pixel 9 devices through Play Store. Therefore, the Expressive Captions feature will initially expected to be available on Pixel 9 devices, with a potential rollout to other Pixel and Android smartphones to follow.
