Apple is reportedly considering new AirPods with cameras, which may enter mass production by 2026, TF International Securities Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated. With a reliable track record in the past around Apple leaks, the analyst said the accessory could feature an infrared (IR) camera, which could be similar to the Face ID component available on other Apple products.
According to Kuo, Foxconn, which has an annual capacity of 18-20 million units, or nearly 10 million Apple AirPods, is the supplier of the camera. The actual demand for the unit will rely on market trends. The wearable could be used with the Apple Vision Pro and upcoming MR headsets to enhance the spatial audio experience. Kuo also cited an example of how the system could be implemented.
"When a user is watching a video with Vision Pro and wearing this new AirPods, if users turn their heads to look in a specific direction, the sound source in that direction can be emphasised to enhance the spatial audio/computing experience," Kuo said. The IR optics may detect environmental changes to enable air gesture controls and improve user interactions.

Apple has reportedly filed patents in this direction. While it is unclear which model may get the feature, reports speculate the integration could be available on the upcoming Apple AirPods Pro. The current AirPods Pro already offer lossless audio for the mixed reality headset. Meanwhile, Mark Gurman in February claimed the company explored the idea of making AirPods with cameras.
The company is reportedly also considering AI and health sensors for the upcoming hearable device. This device could use the camera to capture data and process it via AI to assist people in daily activities. Among other wearables tipped in the Power On newsletter were a smart ring and smart glasses. However, Gurman stated these plans may (or may not) get scrapped before production.
