iOS 18 Developer Beta 2: Cupertino-based tech giant Apple has introduced iOS 18 Beta 2 update for developers during the testing phase. Announced at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, the second beta comes roughly two weeks after the initial beta release. Developers can opt-in to receive beta updates from the Settings within the Software Update options with an Apple ID linked to a developer account.
While Apple Intelligence is expected later, the update brings Home Screen customisations such as dark mode and tinting options for app icons and arranging icons in an open grid freely. Plus, the Control Center offers customisation options, and third-party developers can add app controls. Support for iPhone Mirroring and SharePlay will also be available in the beta 2 update for Apple devices.
The Messages app is getting Rich Communication Services texting standard for a better messaging experience with Android devices. However, the RCS toggle is only available in the US, according to MacRumors. Messages will also bring options to schedule texts, new text effects, messaging via satellite and Tapback responses via any emoji.
The Passwords app can help people store account credentials, passkeys, verification codes and Wi-Fi details. An app lock mechanism via FaceID and TouchID can help users restrict control over their app while the phone is unlocked and used by someone else. As for other enhancements, summarisation in Safari, an overhauled Photos app, Tap to Cash option in Apple Cash, equation solving and translation in Notes, game mode, and head gestures for AirPods are a part of the update.
Apple will monitor the bugs and performance issues in iOS developer beta 2 and work on them before a wider release. While the beta update is rolling out to developers, the public beta will be available in July 2024. A wider release for the OS is expected this fall. Enhanced Apple Intelligence updates are expected in 2025.
